One activity in particular has worked very well to help fundraise so that libraries can continue to provide new books and special programming events to kids – Boot Drives! These are a fun way to spread smiles and information about the importance of literacy.
What a Boot Drive typically consists of is a group of AALLP volunteers (from the library, schools, Rotary Club, etc.), who hold up a police member’s boot while standing by the entryway to a local business (grocery stores or department stores typically) and collecting cash donations. Your local AALLP chapter may be able to collect donations of prizes or give-aways such as posters or “Treasure Chest” toys, too! Sometimes it’s a good idea to have a police liaison along as well – not necessarily to fund-raise, but to explain all the great things that Adopt-a-Library can do when partnering with schools and libraries.
Just make sure they bring some extra footwear!
